About
Maureen Jolie Anderson is a video artist whose work often deals with the commingling of objectified history and subjectivized cultural memory. Her work utilizes appropriated and archival, textual, visual and audio materials to create speculative historical narratives.
She has created a group of videos using the year of her birth, 1977. The year becomes a starting point from which to explore global social and political media contexts from a time in one's life for which one cannot have any direct personal memory at all. As such, audiovisual recordings become substitutes for a memory she is incapable of having outside the recordings themselves.
